The source of my dataset was from the uncanny x-men-250-290-covers.csv, and I filtered the data by removing unnecessary data from columns like narrative captions, Characters speaking, Dialog Text, and a Special Notes column. I then arranged the remaining columns into alphabetical order by the cover artist. Using the website rawgraphs, I decided to use a chord diagram to visualize the data which was split into three categories: cover issue, cover artist, and characters visualized. I chose the chord diagram because it was the simplest and easiest to understand visual representation for my data, separating each artist by color and pointing to the x-men characters that corresponded to them. The character names represent the characters who appeared on the cover and the numbers next to the character names represents the comic issue that they appeared for, which was much less intuitive.I tried many different graphs but with the remaining data I had from the file, it was hard to create a different graph that would still be able to show the data that I wanted.

From the results, it was clear that Jim Lee made up the majority of the data, creating art for about half of the comics. From that half, you can see that Wolverine appeared very often, which makes sense considering that Wolverine is one of, if not the most, popular x-men characters. Other than Wolverine, other characters that often reappeared were Professor X, Storm, and Psylocke, who are lesser known X-Men characters. I was unsurprised by the findings since I expected Wolverine, the most well known X-Men character to appear often and for many different artists to add him to their cover art. It would be interesting to see whether the release of the Wolverine movies affected the frequency of him being added to comic covers.

For my website I decided to add a picture of one of Jim Lee’s covers which included Wolverine. Many people might struggle to identify the characters featured on the covers besides Wolverine, which could help explain why Wolverine appears so frequently. Recognition of Wolverine by a wider audience could contribute to his prominence in the data. I also embedded the chord diagram that I created using the data from the X-Men csv file.

I gained many insights from how I approached the data. I was able to use techniques I learned from this class to change the data to fit my needs, and I decided that from the list of options that were given that a graph would be the best option to represent the data. This type of data analysis relates more to Digital Arts and Humanities because while data analysis focuses more on quantitative analysis and statistics modeling I not only covered that but also the reasoning behind the data and aesthetics that were used and found the reason why Wolverine was used so much by a wide array of cover artists. The reasoning behind the cover artists was important to Digital arts and Humanities because it allows for a deeper understanding of the reasons people make choices behind certain aesthetics.

X-Men characters associated with cover artists

Hacking Humanities midterm: Wesley Yang This project is an analysis of several different x-men covers and cover artists to determine if there was any connection between the likeliness of a character being drawn on the cover of the comic, and the cover artist for that comic.
